Prostate cancer patients should not rely on a conventional biopsy when deciding between surgery and active surveillance, we hear from Jesse Le, MD. Reason: A conventional “blind” biopsy may fail to reveal the true extent of the cancer. Better: A targeted biopsy, which fuses an MRI with a 3-D ultrasound to more accurately determine the grade of the cancer and help doctors decide whether treatment or surveillance makes the most sense.
Jessee Le, MD, is resident physician in the department of urology at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine, California.
